Coronation Road, Empress Road and Kings Road were given their current royal names to commemorate the coronation of King George V in 1911. These were once private roads belonging to the estate of Hokkien merchant Choa Lam Tiong.
Before the establishment of Coronation Plaza, the area consisted of a row of shophouses that usually flooded in the 1960s.

The Future of Coronation
Due to the low traffic Coronation Shopping Plaza has experienced, the 312 square feet shopping is being placed on sale for $1,518,000 per unit. The listing mentions how tenancy is until May 2019 and that there is a huge potential for en-bloc.
However, while the mall still stands, many regulars will continue patronizing the shops for its familiarity and its old-school appeal. "It is a mystical feeling, like you are going back to the 1970s, and you can relax," said Mr Leong (Yeo, 2014). Based on our conversations with those who frequent the shopping center and our own experiences, there are stalls that we have a relationship with, causing us and others to return. As long as these stalls remain open for business, there would be people visiting the mall.
